Parenting Your Teenager: When is it OK to Quit'
Q. My daughter is a junior in high school and has played an instrument and/or played in band all her life. Now all of a sudden she wants to quit lessons and quit band. Is this normal or a warning sign of something bad? Should we let her quit' A. There are times when wanting to drop something that has been a big part of your life can indicate a problem in need of immediate attention. If there are any other signs that your daughter might be depressed or using drugs, then you will want to get her two appointments - one with her doctor and one with a family counselor who works with teenagers. If she's not depressed and/or doing drugs, then dropping an instrument and band may be a decision that she is ready to make. Certainly she is old enough to make that decision, and she may have simply lost interest. How to End Gracefully You can tell her that if dropping the instrument and band is something she wants to do, there are two things she needs to do first. The first is have her write a letter of thanks to the person who taught her the instrument and to the band director, thanking each for their time and effort and sharing what she has learned. I suggest this for two reasons: It's simply a classy thing to do, and it may re-awaken in her the reasons she got involved in the band. The second is to tell her she can quit band only after she finds something else to be involved in. It's quite fine to want to quit something, but at her age, it needs to be replaced with something else. This is because one of the strongest needs of kids and teens is to have a sense of belonging. This need is so strong that a teen will get it met some how, either in a positive place or a negative place. By requiring that she find something else to be a part of, you are helping to make sure she finds a positive place to belong. To Test or Not To Test - That Is the Question Little Suzy has really been having a hard time getting some of her assignments done. When she reads in class, she struggles with many words, and her mother reported at conference time that Suzy spends hours each night on homework. Would You Hire This Teacher' Imagine you were the principal of the school that your child would be attending. Imagine that you were authorized to pick out which teachers to hire. Is Your child Learning Nothing' You send your child to school and the teachers teach them. If that is what you think, you could be way wrong ! While most teachers are good at presenting information to a class, learning happens ONLY if kids actually want to learn. Teachers may have little time for individual work, and you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. And in many schoolrooms today a majority of the class see learning as not cool, with kids trying hard to not learn ! You may think that the school will tell you if your child is not learning, but you will probably be way wrong there. School funding generally depends on the school saying how good they are at teaching children, so often they will say that all kids are doing fine even when many are learning nothing. You may think that school inspectors will ensure that kids are learning well, but NO their job is only to ensure that teachers are teaching well. So is your child learning nothing ' Well many parents today find out by setting their children their own school tests - as by using Math Sheets that come with the answers. It can be made an easy fun 5-minute daily game "let's play our 'my school test' game". Not only will you then know that your child is learning, but you should find that you showing a little regular interest in their learning will increase their learning motivation strongly. You can stick to maths sheets only, or can vary your mini-school-test to science or other subjects using questions from their schoolbooks. Just keep it brief so it does not become a chore for them. If you show a little regular interest in your child's learning then they will want to learn, and will not follow anti-learning classmates. Then when the school says that your child is doing fine, it will happen to actually be the truth! Responding to Criticism Without Being Defensive In an actual war, to be attacked means to have our survival threatened. Thus, we might chose between surrender, withdrawal, or counterattack. When we feel attacked (criticized or judged) by others in conversation, we often move into that same kind of survival mentality and automatically defend ourselves. But conversation is different than war. When we defend against criticism, we give more power to the criticism and the person dishing it out than is warranted.
